Building a Web Community: Why and How?

Filed under: Search Engine Optimization, Stagecoach Express, by Nik — Tags: , , — Nik @ 9:09 am

Most of us have a few favorite websites we visit on a regular basis. For me, it’s the content that is updated regularly, like forums, blogs, RSS feeds, and even news aggregates, that keeps me coming back for more. Because there is always something fresh and interesting to read or do, I tend to visit these websites on a daily or weekly basis, reading articles, participating in discussions, voting in polls, and even playing browser-based multi-player games.

Really Going Green

Filed under: by Nik — Tags: — Nik @ 8:16 am

Stagecoach Designs is a pretty eco-conscious company. All our lights are CFLs, we used recycled paper in our printers, our computers and servers all using energy-saving settings, but this week when I was shopping for supplies, I think I took it a step further. (more…)

4.13%!

Filed under: by Nik — Tags: , , , , , , — Nik @ 9:01 am

According to a recent study completed by the fine people that make the Opera browser:

Opera also ran the pages indexed by MAMA through the W3C’s validation tools to see how many conform with standards. The results show that only 4.13 percent are valid.

Every site designed by Stagecoach Designs passes the XHTML 1.1 validity test. That means every one of our clients is part of this 4.13%!

Compling with web standards is important to us, since it insures that even without revision websites designed by Stagecoach will be cross-browser compatible, and stand up to coding standard changes far longer than most websites.

To learn more about Stagecoach Designs coding standards, and how we do business, check out the Methods & Values section of our website, and be sure to stop by and visit us at our storefront location at 249 King St. W in Dundas, Ontario!

Letting the Community Innovate For You

Filed under: Stagecoach Express, by Nik — Nik @ 1:49 pm

This summer, I started running again. After a few weeks of pushing too hard and burning out, I found the Couch-to-5K running program:

http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

Designed to get slackers like me into running without burning out from overexertion, the Couch-to-5K program was ideal for my particular situation. By starting slow and building up, I found myself enjoying running, and even promoting this program to my friends and family.

Embeddable Google Books

Filed under: by Nik — Nik @ 9:51 am

Well, it looks like I’m going to be spending even more time in front of a computer screen.

Google recently made it easier to embed, into your website, any book available through Google Book Search.

Use this snippit of code:

<script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://books.google.com/books/previewlib.js”></script>
<script type=”text/javascript”>
GBS_insertEmbeddedViewer(’GkCpLIk7aisC‘,600,500);
</script>

Business Networking and Other Marketing

Filed under: by Nik — Tags: , , — Nik @ 10:25 am

In addition to our online marketing and promotion, Stagecoach Designs is a big believer in referral networking and word-of-mouth marketing. I belong to the Bay Area chapter of BNI [Business Networking International], and Marianne Sandvall (our account manager) belongs to a chapter here in Dundas called Referral Winners.

My BNI chapter is gearing up for a trade show on the third week of September, and as part of the cross promotion we are doing for this, I’d like to list the members of my BNI here for you. Maybe you’ll find a service you need, maybe you’ll see a person you know. “Read More” to see the list: (more…)

I’m reserving judgment for the time being.

SEO: getting the most from every search

Nik BoylanDid you watch this past season of The Biggest Loser? Did you notice the dramatic increase in product placement throughout the course of the show? Yes? So did all of the friendly neighbourhood SEO techs working for the advertisers, and you can bet they took advantage of it.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the term used for making your website easily noticed by search engines, which of course gets your website placed higher in the listing of websites when a term is “googled” or “yahooed”. Getting on the first page of search results is the main goal; getting in the first three listings is the ultimate dream.
